Former Rochdale midfielder Joe Thompson has died at the age of 36, following a courageous and prolonged battle with cancer. The beloved footballer, who inspired fans both on and off the pitch, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, surrounded by his family.
Thompson, who first joined Manchester United’s academy at age nine before making his professional mark at Rochdale, was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma in April 2023. The aggressive form of blood cancer had spread to his lungs, marking his third encounter with the disease. Despite previously overcoming cancer twice during his playing career, the latest diagnosis proved fatal.
A proud native of Bath, Thompson’s football journey began and ended at Rochdale, where he had three separate stints and became a club legend. He also played for clubs like Tranmere Rovers, Carlisle United, Southport, and Bury during his 13-year professional career, amassing over 200 appearances for Rochdale alone.

Thompson was first diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013 while playing for Tranmere Rovers. He beat the disease in 2014, only to face a second diagnosis in 2017 during his third spell with Rochdale. Miraculously, he returned to football and made history in 2018 by scoring the goal that saved Rochdale from relegation—a moment he described as “written in the stars.”
He announced his retirement from football in 2019, saying he had “pushed his body to the absolute limit.” After leaving the sport, Thompson transitioned into a career as a media pundit, mentor, and motivational speaker, using his platform to inspire others battling adversity.
Even after receiving his third diagnosis in 2023, Thompson continued to advocate for cancer awareness. In October 2024, he led a 21-mile fundraising walk from Manchester United’s Old Trafford to Rochdale’s Crown Oil Arena, joined by nearly 300 supporters raising awareness and funds for cancer treatment initiatives.
