The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has asserted that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is presumed innocent of fraud charges until a court determines otherwise.
The anti-corruption agency noted that Bello’s trial is ongoing and emphasized that only the court has the authority to establish his guilt or innocence.
The EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwuajeren, made the comments on Monday during an appearance on a TV programme.
Uwuajeren explained that criminal trials in Nigeria can be lengthy due to the necessity of presenting witnesses and evidence in court.

He stated that the EFCC is actively fulfilling its role by bringing forth witnesses and evidence, while underscoring that the ultimate verdict lies solely with the court.
He pointed out that the constitution clearly indicates that anyone on trial is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Additionally, he mentioned that any developments regarding Bello’s political party are unrelated to the EFCC or the charges he faces.
Uwuajeren emphasized that the commission does not engage in party politics and is focused on prosecuting the fraud case in accordance with the law.
He reassured Nigerians of the EFCC’s commitment to ensuring justice for both the prosecution and the defense, asserting that the case has been handled appropriately.
The EFCC spokesperson also stated that the agency will continue to adhere to the legal process until the court reaches a final ruling.
