Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been formally charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, following a lengthy investigation by the Metropolitan Police. The charges relate to incidents allegedly involving three different women between 2021 and 2022.

The high-profile case has sent shockwaves through the football world, as the 32-year-old Ghanaian international, who joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in a £45.3 million transfer in 2020, faces serious legal challenges. Two of the rape charges are linked to one woman, three are tied to another, and a single count of sexual assault is connected to a third individual.

Partey, whose contract with Arsenal expired on Monday, has denied all allegations and insists he is ready to clear his name. In a statement released by his lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, he expressed his determination to prove his innocence, stating that he has fully cooperated with the police and Crown Prosecution Service throughout the three-year investigation.

The charges stem from an investigation that began in February 2022, after a report of rape was filed with police. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the case, emphasized that the primary concern remains the well-being and support of the women involved. He also urged anyone with relevant information to reach out via email at CIT@met.police.uk.

Partey is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 5. With the legal process now moving forward, his legal team has stated that he will refrain from making further public comments.

During his four-year stint at Arsenal, Partey made 130 Premier League appearances, scoring nine goals. He played a crucial role in the club’s second-place finish last season, contributing four goals in 35 league matches and appearing 12 times in the UEFA Champions League as the Gunners reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.

Internationally, Partey has been a key figure for the Ghanaian national team, earning over 50 caps and recently featuring in World Cup qualifying matches in March. His abrupt exit from the pitch to the courtroom marks a stunning turn in the career of one of Africa’s most high-profile footballers, with global attention now shifting to the courtroom battle that lies ahead.
