The Onne Multipurpose Terminal on Thursday, commissioned two new mobile harbour cranes at the federal ocean terminal in Onne Port, Rivers State.

The firm also opened a state-of-the-art container freight station to offer value-adding services for importers and exporters.

The investment valued at $25 million and the harbour cranes were imported from Germany, each with the capacity of delivering 25tonnes of containers per hour and an outreach of 20 containers across.

It was learnt that the mobile harbour cranes are the biggest ever deployed in a Nigerian port and will set a new standard by allowing larger vessels than ever to enter the nation’s ports.

Speaking during the commissioning, Managing Director of Nigeria Ports Authority, Abubakar Dantsoho, who was represented by the Onne Port Manager, Abdulrahmon Hussain applauded the firm for their investments.

He said that in recent years, the firm has grown from strength to strength and shown its commitment to growing Nigeria’s economy.

“This is a big victory for the company, for NPA and for the Nigerian economy. You see what Onne Multipurpose Terminal has done. The two harbour cranes will bring in more businesses to the country, more revenue to the federal government, to investors and to others,” NPA chief executive stated.

He reiterated that the dogged determination of firm to continue investing in state-of-the-art equipment to ensure ease of business is in line with the policy drive and vision of the NPA managing director.

Dantsoho also spoke of the need for collaboration between investors, government agencies, importers, agents and other stakeholders, adding that if other operators bring in such an investment into the country, the Nigeria economy will boom, while the nation will become a maritime hub in sub – Sahara Africa.
