A devastating fire broke out at the Lagos State Government staff quarters in Ogba, engulfing a section of the residential building in the early hours of Friday, August 30. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the blaze, which caused significant property damage, was triggered by an electrical surge.
The fire erupted around 2:39 a.m., with LASEMA receiving distress calls through the state’s 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines. Dr. Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, stated that the agency swiftly deployed its emergency response team from the command and control center in Alausa to the scene.
Upon arrival, the responders discovered that the fire had fully engulfed one of the two-bedroom flats in Block 21, a three-story building comprising 16 two-bedroom flats. The blaze, which originated in the children’s bedroom due to an electrical surge, completely destroyed the room and led to millions of naira in property damage.

But thanks to the quick actions of LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigerian Police, the fire was contained and extinguished before it could spread to other parts of the building. Despite the extensive damage to the affected flat, no casualties or injuries were reported.
As of 5 a.m., emergency personnel were still on-site, ensuring that the situation was fully under control. In the aftermath of the incident, occupants were educated on the importance of proper use and maintenance of electrical appliances to prevent such tragedies in the future.
