A devastating fire tore through Ajah Market near Alesh Bus Stop in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Sunday night, consuming goods and valuables estimated to be worth millions of naira.
The inferno in Ajah Market reportedly started around 9 p.m., ravaging multiple shops stocked with highly combustible materials. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but the incident has left many traders devastated as they assess their losses.
According to Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), emergency responders from LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services quickly mobilized to contain the blaze. Despite their efforts, significant damage was done before the fire was brought under control.

“The LASEMA Response Team, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, acted swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. “Efforts are ongoing to completely extinguish the fire and salvage remaining valuables.”
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported, as the market was closed for Sunday, and traders were not present at the time of the incident. However, the financial losses are expected to be substantial, with many traders fearing a tough road ahead to recover from the destruction.
