Twelve shops, including property valued in the millions of naira, were destroyed by fire on Thursday night, at the Agodi Mayegun Cement Store Market in Ibadan, Oyo State.
General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday.
He said that the fire service was alerted to the fire via a distress call made by a resident, Mr. Young.
According to him, upon receiving the emergency call, a team of firefighters was dispatched to the scene.
He said thanks to their swift response and decisive action, the firefighters were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby shops, thereby safeguarding additional properties valued at billions of naira from potential destruction.

Akinyinka indicated that preliminary investigations suggest a power surge as the probable cause of the fire, which ignited at Block A, No. 64, within the bustling Mayegun Cement Store Market.
The flames raged for over three hours, posing a significant challenge to the firefighters before they successfully extinguished the inferno.
The quick intervention of the fire service played a crucial role in minimising the overall damage to the market and surrounding areas.
