Parts of the Katsina metropolis were plunged into darkness following a fire outbreak that damaged a 15 MVA power transformer at the IBB Way Injection Substation, triggering a Katsina blackout.
The incident was confirmed in a public notice issued on Monday by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), signed by its Head of Corporate Communication, Sani Sani.
KEDCO said the fire affected the 15 MVA TR3 transformer at the IBB Way Injection Substation and occurred late on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
The electricity distribution company said the cause of the fire had not yet been determined.
KEDCO disclosed that its technical team had been deployed to the facility to investigate the incident and assess the level of damage, assuring residents that efforts were underway to restore supply as quickly as possible.
The company explained that affected feeders were isolated as a safety precaution to protect lives and property, adding that the transformer fire impacted several parts of Katsina metropolis.
Areas affected by the outage include Kofar Kaura, Government Reservation Area (GRA), Dandagoro, parts of Kofar Marusa, Janbango, Kano Road, and surrounding communities.
While apologising to customers for the disruption, KEDCO reiterated that safety and speedy restoration of electricity remains its top priority.
The notice read: “Kano Electricity Distribution Company regrets to inform its esteemed customers in Katsina of a fire incident involving a 15 MVA TR3 power transformer at the IBB Way injection substation, which occurred in the late hours of Sunday, January 4, 2026.
