FIFA President Gianni Infantino has addressed the contentious racism claims involving Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior and Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni, indicating a move towards stricter regulations in international football.
Infantino made his comments on March 1, 2026, during an interview that followed extensive media coverage of the issue after a UEFA Champions League playoff match in Lisbon on February 17, 2026.
In that match, Vinícius accused Prestianni of using a racist slur, which was further complicated by Prestianni’s gesture of covering his mouth.
Infantino suggested that players who cover their mouths when speaking to opponents should be sent off, as such actions could be seen as suspicious and potentially hide offensive language, particularly in cases involving discrimination.
His stance has contributed to ongoing discussions at the International Football Association Board (IFAB) regarding new regulations aimed at enhancing anti-racism efforts on the field.

Infantino’s strong remarks underscore FIFA’s commitment to fighting racism in football and establishing clearer standards of conduct ahead of significant tournaments.
