The Federal Government is gearing up to transform Nigeria’s transportation landscape with the groundbreaking Lagos-Abuja Super Highway and High-Speed Train Project, set to commence in February 2025. This ambitious initiative aims to revolutionize connectivity between Lagos and Abuja while enhancing infrastructure across multiple states.

Engineer Mutiu Yinka Idris, the Director of Operations at AEC-Geofocus, a consortium of engineers, planners, and investors managing the project, disclosed this during a media interaction in Ibadan. According to Idris, the project is estimated to cost $16 billion and is being developed under a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Maintain (DBFOM) model.

The project spans an impressive 500 kilometers, linking Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The high-speed train will feature a dual-gauge rail line capable of reaching speeds of 250 km/h, reducing travel time between Lagos and Abuja to under three hours. In addition to the primary stations in Lagos and Abuja, there will be 11 strategically located intermediate stops.

The accompanying highway will consist of eight lanes, including two service lanes and 13 tolling points. Within the project’s scope are additional transformative features, including the construction of 10 smart cities, one million housing units, and an Independent Power Plant. These elements are designed to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and provide modern living solutions.

Engineer Idris highlighted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of enhancing Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure and overall living standards. He described the project as a “game-changer” for the nation, capable of driving economic prosperity and improving the quality of life for millions of Nigerians.

This $16 billion venture is poised to reshape Nigeria’s transportation system, making travel more efficient and boosting economic activity along the Lagos-Abuja corridor. As the February 2025 kickoff date approaches, Nigerians eagerly await the transformative impact of this historic project under President Tinubu’s administration.
