The federal government is set to deploy 7 million smart meters through the presidential metering initiative to eradicate the long-standing issue of estimated billing.
Personal Assistant on Special Duties to the President, Kamarudee Yusuf, disclosed this in a press release dated June 2, 2025.
The release quoted the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Mrs. Olu Verheijen, as saying that the initiative is crucial for enhancing transparency and efficiency in the energy sector.
Verheijen said the primary objective of the smart meter roll-out is to minimize collection losses, which have plagued the distribution of electricity and hampered revenue generation for utilities.
She added that by providing accurate real-time data on electricity consumption, the smart meters will not only ensure fair billing for consumers but also help distribution companies (DisCos) protect their revenue streams from fraud and technical losses.
according to her, the government is working on resolving legacy electricity sector debts through a strategic combination of cash payments and promissory notes.
“This initiative aims to stabilize the financial health of the sector and restore investor confidence.

“The transition to smart metering technology will enable precise billing based on actual usage rather than estimates, which are often subject to discrepancies and customer complaints.
“This shift is expected to improve customer satisfaction and trust in the electricity supply system.
“Distribution companies will be held accountable to stricter performance metrics as part of this initiative.
“They will be required to make substantial investments to enhance access to electricity and improve the reliability of services provided to consumers,” the statement said.
Verheijen said the reforms are integral to the Tinubu administration’s broader strategy to overhaul electricity delivery in Nigeria.
“By fostering a financially viable power sector, the government aims to ensure sustainable energy access for all Nigerians, ultimately contributing to the country’s economic development and quality of life,” the presidential aide added.
