The federal government has pledged its commitment to support the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in overcoming the challenges that the journalism profession faces today.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, during the NUJ’s 70th anniversary Gala and Award Night held in Abuja.

Idris emphasized the important relationship President Bola Tinubu has with journalists, particularly highlighting their collective efforts in promoting democracy and press freedom in Nigeria.

He stated that a strong and responsible media is vital for the country’s democratic stability.

The minister acknowledged that journalism today is grappling with several issues, especially in the digital world.

He pointed out the challenges brought on by new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and misinformation, which can mislead the public with fake content.

Idris assured that the Tinubu administration is dedicated to maintaining press freedom and will continue to support policies that empower the media.

He expressed a desire to work with the NUJ to address crucial matters such as ensuring fair treatment for journalists, adapting to digital advancements, and promoting gender equality.

During the event, former Ogun State Governor, Segun Osoba, a respected elder in the journalism community, reflected on the journey of the NUJ, noting its struggles with divisions in the past.

He praised the union for uniting journalists under one umbrella and emphasized the importance of the NUJ as the primary organization for all journalists, unlike other groups that serve specific interests.

Osoba also called for the NUJ to create a website to list and recognize all trained journalists, highlighting concerns about unqualified individuals claiming to be journalists.

Prof. Tender Akanni from the Lagos State University presented a talk on the impact of artificial intelligence in journalism.

He pointed out that while AI can help with producing and sharing information, there are ethical challenges that come with it, stressing the need for human oversight to ensure accuracy.

The event also featured several awards, including a posthumous Life Achievement Award honoring the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, a former governor of Lagos State.

A book titled “Bleeding Ink,” written by the NUJ’s former National Secretary, Malam Shu’aibu Leman, was also presented and launched at the gathering.

The event brought together guests from various sectors, including government officials and members of the media.
