The Federal Government has flagged off the nationwide Renewed Hope Climate Change Awareness Tour in Kano as part of efforts to drive climate action and expand clean energy solutions across Nigeria.

The initiative, led by the Presidency under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, began with a visit to a clean cookstove manufacturing facility operated by BURN in Kano.

The flag-off event drew participation from senior government officials, representatives of federal ministries, development partners, and the Kano State Government, reflecting growing collaboration in addressing climate change challenges.

Speaking during the tour, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations, Olamide Fagbuji, said the programme is designed to highlight practical and scalable solutions that support Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy.

He noted that the Kano facility illustrates how climate technology, local manufacturing, and carbon financing can be integrated to tackle energy poverty while promoting economic growth.

Also speaking, Kano State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Hashim, who represented Governor Abba Yusuf, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to sustainable industrial development and environmental protection.

He said Kano’s selection as the first stop of the tour underscores its emerging role in climate governance and readiness to support initiatives that deliver both economic and social benefits.

The tour follows Nigeria’s recent approval to export about 5.2 million carbon credits under the Paris Agreement, a move expected to increase climate finance inflows into the country.

Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Salisu Dahiru, said the development positions Nigeria as an emerging player in the global carbon market while ensuring that investments support national development goals.

Chief Executive Officer of BURN, Peter Scott, disclosed that the company has distributed over one million clean cookstoves nationwide since commencing operations in 2023. He added that the Kano factory employs more than 700 workers and supports distribution across Nigeria and the ECOWAS sub-region.

Participants at the event also toured the facility, which currently produces about 35,000 clean cookstoves monthly, with plans to increase capacity to 100,000 units.

The Federal Government said the climate awareness tour will continue across other states as part of broader efforts to promote clean energy adoption, reduce emissions, and support sustainable development nationwide.
