The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has revealed that the federal government has granted the agency approval to recruit more staff before the end of the year to address its long-standing manpower shortage.
Speaking during a media interaction, Adeyeye on Tuesday admitted that NAFDAC has been understaffed despite its expanding responsibilities over the years.
She disclosed that the office of the head of the civil service of the federation has already approved new recruitment, which will begin before the end of 2025 and continue into the new year.
“Yes, we do not have a lot of staff, but the head of service and the government are listening to us. NAFDAC has been chronically short-staffed.
“They have given us approval to recruit, and even before the end of this year, we’ll recruit some and continue into the new year,” Prof. Adeyeye said.
The NAFDAC boss, who has led the agency for nearly eight years, noted that despite significant expansion in its scope and operations, the staff strength has remained nearly stagnant.

Prof. Adeyeye commended the agency’s personnel for their dedication, describing them as “workhorses” who often perform the duties of multiple officers to ensure public safety.
“The people standing around me are workhorses. Each person does the job of four or five people because we have to safeguard the health of the nation,” she said.
She reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to strengthening its human capacity and operational efficiency to deliver on its mandate of ensuring that only safe, wholesome, and properly regulated products are available to Nigerians.
