The Federal Government (FG) has intensified efforts to strengthen the operational capacity of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) as part of its broader counterterrorism and counterinsurgency strategy, with the planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters from the United States.
The move is aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s ability to confront evolving security threats across the country.
As part of the procurement process, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, recently led a Programme Management Review meeting with senior officials of the United States government and representatives of Bell Textron, the American aerospace firm manufacturing the helicopters. The meeting was held in San Diego, California.
The AH-1Z Viper, a modern attack helicopter currently deployed by the U.S. military, is equipped with advanced surveillance sensors, precision-guided weapons, and robust night-fighting capabilities.
The platform is expected to significantly enhance the NAF’s ability to provide close air support, carry out armed reconnaissance missions, and sustain air operations in challenging environments.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Air Marshal Aneke commended the U.S. government and Bell Textron for their continued cooperation, professionalism, and openness throughout the acquisition process.
The Air Chief noted that the structured review process reflects the NAF’s emphasis on accountability, program discipline, and result-driven execution.
“We appreciate the professionalism and transparency demonstrated throughout this engagement, and we remain fully committed to working closely with our partners to ensure the timely and successful delivery of the helicopters,” Aneke said.
He explained that the procurement of the AH-1Z helicopters goes beyond fleet expansion, describing it as a symbol of the enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States.

According to him, the collaboration underscores a shared commitment to regional and global security, anchored on mutual trust, shared values, and a collective vision for peace and stability.
“This partnership reflects our common resolve to confront emerging security challenges through cooperation and sustained capability development,” he added.
Air Marshal Aneke reaffirmed the NAF’s urgency and determination to complete the acquisition, assuring U.S. officials that all required measures would be taken to facilitate prompt delivery.
He further urged members of the programme management team to remain proactive and efficient to ensure production timelines are met without exceeding budgetary limits.
“Timelines and standards must go hand in hand. We must remain focused, innovative, and solution-driven,” the CAS stressed.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his consistent support and commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Air Force.
