The Federal Government has extended the implementation of the 2025 capital budget to November 30, 2026, marking a shift from earlier assurances that overlapping budget cycles would end by March 2026.

The decision means that 30 percent of the 2025 capital expenditure will begin rollout by the end of next week, while the remaining 70 percent has been rolled into the 2026 capital budget to ensure continuity of projects and prevent funding gaps.

The announcement was made by the Accountant General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, who disclosed that warrants have already been issued to Ministries, Departments and Agencies. According to him, implementation will commence through the Treasury House once final processes are concluded.

The development contrasts with earlier commitments by Bola Tinubu to end the practice of multiple budget implementations within the fiscal cycle. The extension underscores the government’s effort to stabilize public finance operations while managing ongoing projects across sectors.

Officials confirmed that the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System platform has been restored and is now fully operational, clearing a major bottleneck that previously affected disbursements and budget execution.

Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, stressed the need for strict compliance with the Public Procurement Act. She said adherence to procurement rules remains central to curbing waste, strengthening transparency and ensuring value for money in capital projects.

The rollover arrangement is expected to support infrastructure delivery, including roads, power, health and education projects that require multi year funding cycles. Analysts say the extension may ease implementation pressures but will also test the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and timely budget performance.

With capital spending playing a critical role in economic growth and job creation, attention will now shift to how effectively the extended timeline translates into measurable project delivery across the country.
