The federal government has dismissed a history textbook titled: ‘Living History’, asserting that the textbook has not been approved for use in Nigerian schools.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations of the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade.

The Federal Ministry of Education, in an official statement today, said the textbook was neither endorsed nor recommended by the government and should not be adopted by any educational institution in the country.

The ministry explained that ‘Living History’ was never submitted to the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), the statutory agency responsible for assessing and approving instructional materials in line with the national curriculum.

“As such, the textbook was not reviewed, not recommended by NERDC, and is absent from the ministry’s official list of approved history textbooks,” the statement noted.

The ministry said consultations with the NERDC’s leadership and a review of textbooks approved under the new curriculum further confirmed that ‘Living History’ does not qualify as an authorised learning material for nationwide use.

The government therefore advised parents, teachers, school owners, and administrators to ignore public speculation and emotionally driven narratives surrounding the book and to desist from introducing it into classrooms.

It warned that the use of unapproved textbooks could compromise curriculum standards and adversely affect the quality of teaching and learning.

“All officially approved textbooks are developed in strict compliance with the national curriculum and are designed to reflect Nigeria’s cultural diversity, shared heritage, and core national values, while promoting balance, inclusivity, and unity,” the ministry stated.

Also, the ministry urged the public to engage in responsible discussions on educational matters and encouraged stakeholders to always verify the approval status of textbooks through recognised channels, particularly NERDC, before use.

“Education is founded on accuracy, and national unity is strengthened through proper understanding,” the statement concluded.
