The federal government has ordered vice-chancellors of all federal universities in Nigeria to begin enforcing the ‘no work, no pay’ policy against members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
University lecturers are currently on strike due to the government’s failure to meet their demands.

The directive was outlined in a circular dated October 13, 2025, and signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.
“In line with the labour laws of the federation, the federal government emphasizes its position on the enforcement of the ‘no work, no pay’ policy concerning any employee who neglects their official duties during the strike period,” the circular states.
The circular was also distributed to the head of the civil service of the federation, the director-general of the budget office of the federation, the permanent secretary of education, pro-chancellors of all federal universities, the accountant-general of the federation, and the executive secretary of the NUC.
