The late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is set to make history as the first African artist to receive the Grammy Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award, a landmark recognition to be presented at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.

The Recording Academy announced that Fela will be honoured for his groundbreaking role in shaping modern music and for a legacy that continues to influence artists across continents and generations. Widely regarded as the creator and driving force behind Afrobeat, Fela fused traditional African rhythms with jazz, funk, and sharp political commentary, building a sound that challenged authority and redefined African music on the global stage.

In its citation, the Recording Academy described Fela as the “architect of Afrobeat,” noting that his fearless creativity and cultural impact reshaped the genre and inspired musicians far beyond Africa. His influence remains visible today in contemporary Afrobeats, hip hop, jazz, and protest music worldwide.

Fela will be celebrated alongside an elite group of global music icons, including Whitney Houston, Paul Simon, Cher, and Chaka Khan, placing him firmly among the most influential figures in the history of recorded music.

The recognition adds to a growing list of posthumous honours for the Nigerian legend. His 1976 album, Zombie, a searing critique of military rule, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025, further cementing his place in music history.

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said the 2025 honourees represent an extraordinary collection of artists whose work has shaped generations, crossed genres, and laid the foundation for modern music culture.

The announcement has sparked widespread celebration across social media, with fans and industry figures hailing the award as a defining moment for African music. Many see the honour as long overdue recognition of Fela’s fearless artistry and his role in opening global doors for African musicians.

With this award, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s status as a global cultural icon is firmly sealed, ensuring that his revolutionary sound and uncompromising message continue to resonate around the world.
