Over 5,000 benefit from federal lawmaker's free medical outreach in Imo

No fewer than 5,000 persons suffering from various ailments have benefitted from the free medical outreach programme organized for their constituents by Hon. Bede Uchenna Ekeh, representing Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala federal constituency in the House of Representatives.

The event which was held at the Nguru/Umuowa Health Centre in Ngor Okpala LGA lasted for five consecutive days with scores of patients treated without paying a dime.

During the exercise, the medical team conducted surgeries, eye screening and laboratory screening, treatment of several ailments, free distribution of drugs and reading glasses blood pressure, weight and blood sugar screening.

The Principal Community Health Worker in charge of the health facility, Mrs Assumpta Mbamara disclosed that people in the area who were disturbed by various illnesses began to troop to the clinic from day one and the number of patients increased by the day until the programme ended last Monday

Mrs Mbamara noted that there were sufficient medical personnel and facilities on ground to attend to patients pointing out that major cases such as surgery and severe eye problems were referred to relevant secondary health facilities.

She commended Hon. Bede Uchenna Ekeh, for his vision in attracting the programme describing it as one that has brought succour to the sick and indigent population in the federal constituency.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Anthonia Oguariri, 64 years, from Egbelu Umuowa told our correspondent that she came to the venue because of persistent visual problems and had received screening as well as drugs for treatment.

Madam Oguariri thanked Hon. Ekeh for remembering the less privileged through the free medical outreach saying that the recent upsurge in the cost of medication and standard of living in general has made the programme most timely and welcome.

Also in his reaction, another beneficiary, Mr Charles Nkwocha 62, who suffered from malaria and cold, confirmed that the exercise was without cost on the beneficiaries.

He stated that drugs administered to him had cured the sickness and thanked the federal lawmaker for the rare gesture while urging those in public offices to emulate Hon. Ekeh in providing support for the constituents.

A community leader and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ngor Okpala council area, Ikemba Cornelius Okere, applauded the the lawmaker for always keeping to his election promise to care about the well-being of his constitute.

Okere noted that the free medical outreach is quite appreciated as it was coming at a time the harsh economic downturn nationwide has made access to quality healthcare a mirage and urged the beneficiaries to always maintain good and healthy habits.
