The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, hosted a high-level 16-man delegation from the Algerian War College led by General Baouche Amirouche. The visit forms part of a strategic study tour by the North African nation to explore mutual areas of collaboration and strengthen Nigeria-Algeria relations.

General Amirouche, while speaking during the visit, underscored the importance of the tour in fostering military cooperation, promoting peaceful coexistence, and enhancing the preservation of shared cultural values. He revealed that Nigeria was chosen due to its globally recognized cultural heritage and rich diversity, which offers unique opportunities for cultural diplomacy and strategic partnership.

Representing the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musawa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammad, welcomed the Algerian delegation and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Algeria. He noted that the growing Nigeria-Algeria relationship is entering a new phase of dynamic collaboration, with tangible mutual benefits.

In a statement issued by the Ministry, Dr. Yawale announced a significant development in bilateral aviation relations as Algeria’s national airline is preparing to launch direct flights to Nigeria. This move, he said, will not only ease travel and tourism but will also serve as a catalyst for economic growth and closer diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

Highlighting the vital role embassies have played in building the relationship, the Permanent Secretary commended the efforts of both the Nigerian Embassy in Algiers and the Algerian Embassy in Abuja for their ongoing commitment to cultural exchange and cooperation. He thanked the Algerian War College for including the Ministry in its study tour itinerary and assured the delegation of Nigeria’s continuous support in the protection and promotion of its cultural legacy.

A key highlight of the event was a thought-provoking paper presentation by Dr. Ben Anamah, Head of the Department of Cultural Industries and Heritage in the Ministry. Titled “The Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict: The Need for Cooperation,” the presentation emphasized the relevance of the 1954 Hague Convention as an international framework for protecting cultural properties, including monuments, artifacts, and archaeological treasures, during times of war and peace.

The visit comes at a time when Nigeria is actively expanding its global cultural footprint and repositioning its tourism and creative sectors for international collaboration. The strengthening of diplomatic and military ties with Algeria signals a renewed commitment to regional unity, cultural preservation, and economic development through tourism and heritage exchange.
