Tensions have erupted at the Federal Character Commission (FCC) headquarters in Abuja as staff staged a mass protest to oppose the rumored bid for a second term by the current Director-General, Dr. Muheeba Danakaka. The workers accuse the DG of running the Commission with what they describe as a repressive and authoritarian hand, fostering a toxic environment that has demoralized the workforce.

The demonstration, which drew a large number of employees, comes amid rising discontent over what staff claim has been a tenure marked by intimidation, injustice, and systemic abuse of power. Eyewitnesses report that Danakaka allegedly attempted to quell the protest by deploying armed thugs to intimidate staff. However, the workers stood their ground and successfully prevented the intruders from entering the premises, signaling a rare show of unity and defiance within the federal institution.

Protesters leveled a series of explosive allegations against Danakaka, ranging from gross mismanagement and job racketeering to embezzlement and financial fraud. They claim that funds meant for staff welfare and office development have been diverted or misused, deepening frustrations within the organization. Accusations of ignoring due process, promoting a culture of favoritism, and stifling career progression have further fueled calls for her immediate removal and for a leadership overhaul.

Appointed in 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, Danakaka’s leadership has, according to staff, been plagued by poor administrative decisions and a blatant disregard for transparency. Many employees argue that the Commission, which is constitutionally mandated to promote fairness and inclusivity in public appointments, has under her watch become a symbol of everything it was created to prevent.

As the protests continue, calls for President Bola Tinubu’s administration to intervene are growing louder. Staff are demanding a thorough investigation into the allegations, the termination of Danakaka’s tenure, and sweeping reforms to restore credibility to the Commission.
