The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced ambitious plans to build two state-of-the-art sports centres in Abuja by 2025, aiming to redefine sports and youth development in the nation’s capital.
This groundbreaking initiative was disclosed by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana, following the 11th FCT Executive Council meeting held late Monday in Abuja.
According to Engr. Yunana, the project is a key component of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, designed to promote a healthier and more productive population. He explained that the centres will feature world-class facilities, including football pitches, lawn tennis and table tennis courts, indoor sports arenas, and other amenities essential for fostering athletic talent and community engagement.
“These centres will serve as hubs for youth development and the physical and mental well-being of residents. They will be accessible to all citizens, ensuring widespread participation in sports and recreational activities,” Yunana stated.
The initiative has been lauded as a significant step toward positioning Abuja as a sports development hub while providing residents with much-needed recreational spaces.
In a related development, Engr. Yunana addressed ongoing issues regarding land title revocations in Maitama District (Cadastral Zone A10). He confirmed that the FCTA had earlier revoked titles of land allottees who defaulted on their Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) payments despite multiple reminders and extensions, including a one-week grace period.

However, in a move to accommodate defaulters, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has extended the payment deadline to January 3, 2025, providing a final opportunity for landowners to settle their obligations.
“Many residents complain about inadequate infrastructure in their areas, yet they fail to fulfill their financial responsibilities. This makes it challenging for the government to deliver critical amenities such as roads and water,” Yunana explained.
He reassured the public that the revenue from these payments is essential for funding infrastructure projects across the FCT and urged defaulters to take advantage of the extended deadline.
The FCTA emphasized its commitment to fostering development and improving the quality of life for Abuja residents, calling for cooperation to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives.
