The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has extended the contracts of two private security firms for an additional two years to ensure the continued protection of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit system. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding critical rail infrastructure and maintaining seamless operations.
Dr. Elechi Chinedum, Mandate Secretary of the Transport Secretariat, disclosed this development during a press briefing on Monday following the FCT Executive Committee meeting in Abuja. While he refrained from naming the security firms, Chinedum provided insights into the necessity of the contract renewal and the history of the Abuja rail system.
The Abuja Rail Mass Transit system, which began a trial phase in 2018, comprises two critical lines: Lot 1A, running from Idu to Kubwa, and Lot 3, stretching from Metro Station to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. However, operations were disrupted in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent nationwide lockdowns. During this period, the 45-kilometer rail line suffered extensive vandalization, including the theft of high-value telecommunication cables.
In response to the damages, the FCTA launched a multi-billion-naira rehabilitation project for the rail system. To prevent further losses, the administration enlisted two private security companies in 2022 to oversee surveillance on Lot 1A and Lot 3.

“The surveillance by these security companies significantly reduced incidents of vandalism,” Chinedum stated. “Now, as the contracts have expired and full commercial operations resumed in May 2024, it is crucial to renew these agreements to ensure uninterrupted service.”
He emphasized the high stakes involved in protecting the rail infrastructure, noting that the vandalization of a single telecommunication cable could severely disrupt train operations for extended periods.
The contract extension, effective from 2024 to 2026, aligns with the directives of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who is committed to ensuring the smooth operation of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit system.
“This extension is not just about securing physical assets; it’s about ensuring that Abuja’s rail services remain reliable and efficient for residents and visitors alike,” Chinedum added.
