The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) distributed over 600 bags of rice to journalists in Abuja as part of activities marking the Christmas season.
The distribution, spearheaded by the FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, is aimed at cushioning the impact of the prevailing economic hardship on members and strengthening unity within the council.
Speaking during the exercise, Ike said the initiative, now in its second year, reflects the council’s deliberate commitment to the welfare of journalists, describing it as more than a seasonal gesture.
“This is not just about rice; it is a clear demonstration of our unwavering commitment to the welfare of our members who continue to serve the public with dedication and courage,” she said.
Earlier, Ike and members of the executive council held an end-of-year interactive session with members of the State Executive Council (SEC), made up of chapel chairmen and secretaries.

She briefed them on achievements recorded so far, particularly the ongoing construction and remodelling of the NUJ Congress Hall.
She urged members to sustain the cooperation and unity in the council in order to consolidate the gains recorded.
At the meeting, SEC members unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Ike’s leadership, describing it as proactive, pragmatic and performance-driven.
Addressing members during the rice distribution, Ike noted that the initiative was introduced to ensure no journalist is left behind during the festive season.
“This marks the second consecutive year of this exercise. Last year, we saw the impact it had on our members and their families, and we are proud to build on that legacy,” she said.
She also reminded journalists of the core values of unionism, solidarity and collective responsibility, especially at a time when media professionals face growing economic and professional challenges.
“As journalists, you make enormous sacrifices daily in the defence of truth, accountability and press freedom. It is our duty as a union to stand by you,” Ike added.
She expressed appreciation to sponsors, partners and members of the executive council for their support, noting that their contributions were helping to strengthen the sense of community within the council.
Members who benefited from the exercise commended the leadership for prioritising their welfare, describing the gesture as timely and reassuring.
