The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has reached a significant achievement under the leadership of Comrade Grace Ike by providing free eye surgery for former council Chairman, Comrade Ndamadu Sule, at the Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja.
The surgery took place on August 28, 2025, and has improved the quality of life for the veteran journalist, who had been dealing with visual impairment for many years.
Comrade Sule expressed his heartfelt thanks to Comrade Ike and her team for their kindness and leadership.
“It has been nearly seven years since I started facing this struggle. I’m grateful for their support and resources,” he said.
He also prayed for continued blessings on Comrade Ike and her executive team, encouraging all journalists to back her leadership.
Sule recalled how Comrade Ike reached out to him before the elections, despite them being strangers at the time.
He prayed for her as a leader, and he feels grateful that her efforts in providing healthcare services to members of the union have made a real difference.

In line with her promise to take care of NUJ members’ health and their well-being, two other journalists, Mr. Nicholas Ngozichukwu from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Mr. Kamoru Odunlami from ITV, are also set to receive free eye surgery at the Nizamiye Hospital after undergoing medical checks.
Those who were screened and found not ready for surgery were given medication and follow-up care to prepare them for future procedures.
The beneficiaries thanked the council for its ongoing support and compassion.
The initiative is part of a larger healthcare plan by the current NUJ-FCT leadership, which is working with Nizamiye Hospital to provide free medical assistance to its members, a first in recent years.
This health initiative highlights the union’s commitment to the welfare of journalists and aims to create a healthier and more compassionate media community in Nigeria’s capital.
