In a move to elevate the infrastructure of Nigeria’s capital, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Executive Committee, led by Minister Nyesom Wike, has approved N33.24 billion for essential projects aimed at transforming Abuja’s urban landscape. These projects, greenlit during the committee’s recent meeting, promise a complete overhaul of key sectors like transportation, security, and public sanitation, set to enhance residents’ quality of life.
The newly approved funds target major projects that will have a lasting impact on Abuja’s infrastructure:
1. Transportation Overhaul: With a staggering N7.22 billion earmarked, the FCT plans to construct access roads to the Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals. This improvement aims to reduce traffic congestion and make public transport more efficient and accessible, enhancing the daily commute for Abuja residents.
2. Airport Upgrades: Funds are set aside for critical improvements at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, including Bill Clinton Road and upgrades to hangars, taxiways, and aprons. These projects signal the government’s commitment to modernizing the airport’s infrastructure, ensuring better connectivity and bolstering Nigeria’s position as a regional hub.
3. Sewage and Energy Maintenance: In a major step toward sustainability, N2.92 billion has been allocated to fuel the Wupa Basin Sewage Treatment Plant. This investment ensures efficient waste management in the FCT, safeguarding public health and sanitation.
4. Educational and Administrative Developments: The Nigerian Law School in Bwari will receive N2.19 billion for new staff quarters, while the FCT Legal Secretariat will use N605.94 million to improve facilities with new office equipment and utility vehicles, reinforcing Abuja’s administrative and educational infrastructure.

5. Enhanced Security Infrastructure: Recognizing the importance of security, funds have been allocated for the construction of access roads to the EFCC Academy in Giri District. This development supports Nigeria’s national security efforts and strengthens the foundation for legal training within the capital.
Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Mr. Chidi Amadi, shared the administration’s goal: “These projects are part of our commitment to ensure the FCT meets the critical infrastructure needs of its people.” With road networks, public facilities, and vital city structures getting a facelift, the administration is driving forward a vision of a modernized Abuja that meets global urban standards.
With visible strides in road construction and urban planning, Wike’s leadership is fast-tracking Abuja’s transformation into a model capital for Nigeria. The projects are anticipated to be completed within the next year, setting a new standard for infrastructure and development in the nation.
This historic N33.24 billion investment could reshape Abuja’s future, bringing modern amenities, increased efficiency, and a higher quality of life for all its residents. As these projects unfold, the FCT will inch closer to its vision of becoming a showcase city in Africa for governance, innovation, and urban planning.
