The FCT Badminton Association has called for a partnership with the Indian High Commission to promote and strengthen badminton in the territory.
Chairman of the FCT Badminton Association board, Usman Bappa, made the request, when he was hosted by the Head of Chancery of the Indian High Commission, Pramod Kumar Agrawal, in Abuja, on Friday.
Bappa emphasised the Indian community’s active participation in badminton and expressed a desire for collaboration.
“We are here to express our desire to collaborate with you; we have been observing your active participation in badminton, not just the Indian High Commission, but also the Indian community in the FCT.
“This is not far from the fact, that the beautiful game of badminton has its roots traced to Ancient Greece, China and India,” Bappa stated.
He disclosed the board’s initiative to organise a badminton competition for in-school and out-of-school indigent children, while intimating Agrawal on the upcoming Area Councils Badminton Cup that will eventually culminate in the Nyesom Wike Tournament.

Also, he said the board plans to hold the Asian Badminton Cup, which will feature participation from various Asian communities in the FCT, including the Indian community.
“This event is in honour of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and we are excited about the Indian community’s involvement,” Bappa added.
According to him, the association is working to equip over 45 clubs in the FCT, and provide regular training for players and officials.
Bappa therefore appealed for support from the Indian High commission, citing the high cost of badminton equipment.
Responding, Agrawal pledged the support of the high commission, commending the board’s initiative for fostering inclusivity, and enhancing the growth of badminton in the FCT.
