The father of the prime suspect, Umar Auwalu, arrested for masterminding the murder of a woman and her 6 children has called on authorities to ensure his speedy trial and execution of his son if found guilty.
Speaking during a programme on a local radio station in Kano on Monday, the father, Auwalu Abubakar, condemned his son’s alleged actions and distanced himself from the crime.
He praised security agencies for the arrest and said investigations were conducted in his presence, adding that he believes his son committed the crime.
Abubakar said neither he nor the suspect’s mother intended to attend court proceedings unless summoned by the court, insisting that the authorities should act decisively to uphold the rule of law.
Meanwhile, the Kano State government has directed the state attorney general and commissioner for justice to take over the prosecution of the suspects linked to the killings.
The directive followed last Saturday’s killings, which plunged the ancient city into shock and grief.
Three principal suspects are currently in police custody in connection with the incident.
Addressing journalists on Monday, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Maude, described the crime as “heinous and inhuman.”

He stated that Governor Abba Yusuf has ordered his office to assume control of the case to ensure justice is dispensed promptly and transparently.
The justice commissioner said the move was aimed at guaranteeing strict adherence to due process and ensuring that justice is not only done but seen to be done.
Maude commended the Kano State Police Command for what he described as a swift and professional response that led to the arrest of the suspects.
He assured residents that the state government would pursue the matter to its logical conclusion and keep the public informed as prosecution progresses.
The commissioner urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, while continuing to support security agencies with credible information that could aid ongoing investigations.
