Former England and Gladiators football star John Fashanu has sued the police for N200 million over his unlawful arrest and detention in connection to a land dispute.
John accused the police of violating his rights, claiming they unlawfully arrested him, his wife Vivian, and his lawyer Chinyere Chigbu over a civil land dispute.
The 62 – year-old, has featured for the likes of Wimbledon and Aston Villa, and had been accused of criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, trespass, and obtaining by false pretense.
Fashanu denies the charges and is seeking N200 million in compensation, insisting he was subjected to inhuman treatment for about three hours by the police on December 16, 2024.

He also believes the police violated their duties with subsequent intermittent constraints of his liberty up to December 19 of same year.
The legal proceedings against the 12 individuals were filed in court under the name Ambassador Fashanu – the official title awarded to him by the federal government after being appointed sports and tourism ambassador.
