The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has declared that cash payments will be banned at all its payment locations across the country beginning Sunday, March 1, 2026.

This represents a significant change in the way transactions are conducted at airports nationwide.

FAAN stated that this new policy is part of its “Go Cashless” initiative, which aims to streamline payments, making them quicker, safer, and entirely digital at all facilities managed by FAAN.

In a statement issued on Friday, the authority indicated that all passengers and visitors at airports will now be required to make digital payments at both international and domestic airports.

This includes entry fees at access gates, parking charges, and fees for executive or VIP lounges.

“In accordance with the directive from the Central Bank of Nigeria, starting March 1, 2026, cash will no longer be accepted at any FAAN payment point,” FAAN announced.

The authority encouraged travelers to prepare for digital transactions at all airports across the country.

Passengers are advised to obtain their Go Cashless cards at designated collection points within terminals, such as access gates and lounges, which will enable them to make payments quickly using a “tap-and-go” system.

FAAN has already begun distributing these cards ahead of the implementation date.

This initiative is in line with the broader cashless strategy endorsed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the federal government, aimed at reducing dependence on physical cash, improving revenue transparency, and minimizing delays at busy airports.

This decision follows previous trials of FAAN’s digital payment system at major airports like the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where cashless payments have been gradually introduced.

The authority reassured travelers that the cashless system is secure and designed to enhance convenience.
