The National Director of Inter-Campus Affairs, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Nwuruku Olisa Alfred, has declared his intention to run for the office of President of Senate of NANS.

Comrade Nwuruku, who was the former Coordinator of NANS Zone B South-South and South-East, made his intention known in a press statement made available to Journalists in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Capital on Wednesday.

“With profound humility, deep reflection, and after extensive consultations with leaders and stakeholders across the student movement, I hereby formally declare my intention to contest for the office of President of the Senate of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS),” Comrade Nwuruku said.

He noted that his aspiration for the office of President of the Senate was not born out of sudden ambition, but a natural progression of a journey shaped by years of passionate service, grassroots engagement, and institutional responsibility within the structures of NANS.

He further added, “Across the Directorates of Special Duties and Inter-Campus Affairs of NANS Headquarters, I committed myself to assignments that required sacrifice, coordination, and the courage to undertake responsibilities that strengthened the operational capacity of the national leadership.

“Within the Directorate of Special Duties and Inter-Campus Affairs, I worked with comrades whose dedication reaffirmed the belief that when committed students unite behind a purpose, even the most difficult assignments become achievable

“In the entirety of the defunct NANS Zone B, our engagements went beyond routine activism. We organized, mobilized, and strengthened the structures that connected campuses and student leaders, reinforcing the idea that the student movement must remain rooted in collective action and coordinated leadership.

“Even within the defunct Zone B structure, where structural transitions posed unique challenges, we remained committed to sustaining the vibrancy of the movement. In moments when uncertainty tested our resolve, we stood firm in the conviction that the Nigerian student movement is larger than temporary institutional adjustments.

“Through these experiences, one lesson consistently stood out: the strength of NANS lies in the courage of its leaders to believe in possibility.

“It is from that conviction that our campaign mantra emerges: Yes, We Can.

” Yes, we can rebuild the legislative dignity of the NANS Senate.
Yes, we can transform the Senate into a chamber that commands respect across campuses and national institutions.
Yes, we can demonstrate that principled student leadership remains a powerful force in shaping the direction of education in Nigeria.

“This philosophy is not merely a slogan. It is a theoretical affirmation of collective agency, the belief that when Nigerian students unite behind vision, discipline, and responsibility, the possibilities before us are limitless.”

Comrade Nwuruku pledged that if entrusted with the responsibility of leading the NANS Senate, his core priorities would be to reposition NANS Senate as a functional legislative institution, consolidate the voice of Nigerian Students in national discourse, strengthen institutional accountability within NANS, advance policy advocacy for Student welfare and promote unity across the Nigerian Student Association.

He further stressed that “division weakens the strength of our collective voice and the NANS Senate must serve as a stabilizing institution that promotes dialogue, inclusion, and unity across campuses, regions, and ideological divides.”
