In a heated twist following the impeachment of former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, prominent political figures in Lagos State are clashing over the issue. Former Nigerian Ambassador to Ghana and two-time minister, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has criticized a recent statement by APC chieftain, Senator Anthony Adefuye, who expressed support for the embattled former speaker.
Obasa, who represented Agege 1 under the APC, was impeached on January 13 by lawmakers citing allegations of misconduct. He was replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda. Speaking for the first time since his removal, Obasa addressed supporters in Ikeja on Saturday, claiming his impeachment did not follow due process and denying allegations of corruption levelled against him.
“I remain the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and will soon resume my legislative duties,” Obasa boldly declared.
Adding fuel to the controversy, Senator Anthony Adefuye, a member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), sided with Obasa. In a recent interview, Adefuye said, “What he is saying is that he was illegally removed, and the procedure was faulty. I agree with him.”
However, in a swift reaction, Obanikoro dismissed Adefuye’s statement as reckless and unbecoming of a leader. Speaking to newsmen on Sunday, the senator did not mince words.
“The statement by Senator Adefuye on the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa is unfortunate, childish, and inconsequential,” Obanikoro remarked. He emphasised that such comments undermine the GAC’s collective authority and disregard hierarchy.

According to Obanikoro, the sensitive nature of the matter demands caution and unity. “As leaders, we must avoid rushing to make personal statements on issues of this magnitude. Since GAC as a unit has not made any pronouncement, it is irresponsible for any member to go public with such opinions.”
Obanikoro further noted that the President of Nigeria had already intervened in the matter, urging restraint from party leaders. “Nobody should come out individually to express an opinion based on privileged status,” he added.
The fallout from Obasa’s impeachment continues to divide Lagos APC leaders, raising questions about party unity and discipline. As the drama unfolds, the eyes of Nigerians remain fixed on the Lagos State House of Assembly for what happens next.
