United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has called on European nations to lend their support to the call for Ukraine to host the UEFA EURO 2028 edition.
Johnson made the call after Russia registered its interest to host the EURO 2028 edition The Trumpet gathered.
The UK had earlier sought to co-host the EURO tournament in 2028 with Ireland prompting the Prime Minister to avail the information through his social media account to UK citizens that “football is coming home”.
Prior to the sanction of Russian club teams and national teams from all football competitions by FIFA and UEFA, Russian hosted the 2018 FIFA World Cup where France defeated Croatia 4-2 to lift the trophy.
However, due to the February 24 invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the UEFA Champions League final which was scheduled to take place at St Petersburg has been moved to Paris, France.
According to football analysts, Russia, which has been ostracized from all football events, does not have the right to tender its bid to host the UEFA EURO 2028 tournament.

Nevertheless, Sky Sport has countered the above assertion by football analysts reporting that the “Russian Football Union was able to make the bid due to the fact that whilst their member teams were suspended, the federation had not been”.
Furthermore, Sky Sports opined that “it is expected that the UEFA executive committee is ready to call an extraordinary meeting which would throw out Russia’s bid”.
The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson angered by Russia’s interest to host the EURO 2028 event, jettisoned his country’s interest to co-host the event in place of Ukraine’s. Johnson said: “The idea of Russia holding any kind of football tournament or any cultural event right now is beyond satire.
He described Russia’s bid as ridiculous, noting that the aggressor must remove its armed forces from Ukraine and concede the EURO 2028 hosting right to Ukraine accordingly.
“I can’t believe that anyone would even consider their suggestion. I think the best thing possible would be that the entire Russian armed forces retire forthwith from Ukraine and hand the tournament to them, of course,” he said.
Consequently, the teams wait to receive feedback from UEFA’s technical specifications for bidding for the tournament.
In regards to the potential host cities and stadiums, the UEFA technical specification is expected to hold talks with the European football governing body to finally make a decision.
