A nurse at Uwani General Hospital in Enugu State has reportedly been suspended after a viral video highlighted deteriorating conditions at the facility, including the absence of electricity and running water.

The video, which gained traction on social media, captured health workers expressing frustration over the challenging environment, noting that the lack of basic amenities was affecting their ability to deliver adequate care, particularly during emergencies.

In the footage, staff members were seen describing how they carry out medical duties in near-dark conditions, without access to clean water—raising serious concerns about hygiene and patient safety within the hospital.

One of the nurses, believed to have shared the video, later spoke out about her suspension, saying she had been removed from clinical duties indefinitely.

“I’m the one who posted about the hospital’s electricity issues. Sadly, I have now been placed on indefinite suspension and removed from my clinical duties. I want to ask Nigerians: did we do anything wrong? The intention was not to discredit the government, but to draw attention to the situation, which has now been acknowledged. I am deeply hurt by this outcome,” she said.

Following the video’s circulation, reports of the suspension sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians criticising the disciplinary action and calling for urgent intervention to address the hospital’s conditions.

Several commentators argued that attention should be directed toward fixing systemic problems in the healthcare sector rather than penalising workers who speak out.

The incident has once again drawn attention to persistent challenges facing public health facilities across the country, including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and limited access to essential resources.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities in Enugu State have not issued an official response regarding both the hospital’s condition and the reported suspension.
