The Enugu State Government has launched a full-scale investigation into the deadly activities of the Oriokpa Masquerade groups following the tragic deaths of two people earlier this week. The incident occurred in the University Town of Nsukka, located in the Nsukka Local Government Area, sparking outrage and fear among residents.

Chief Okey Ogbodo, the state Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, confirmed the government’s swift response in a statement on Friday, emphasizing Enugu’s commitment to ensuring public safety. He revealed that the government had summoned traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the affected communities for a crisis meeting aimed at curbing further violence.

The affected communities include Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo, which have all reportedly witnessed chaos, injuries, and fatalities tied to the Oriokpa masqueraders’ excessive actions. Governor Peter Mbah has directed the state’s Commissioner of Police to spearhead a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

“Governor Peter Mbah has zero tolerance for any form of lawlessness or endangerment of lives in Enugu State,” Chief Ogbodo stated. “We are determined to protect the lives and rights of every citizen, and anyone found guilty of these acts will face the full wrath of the law.”

In addition to the investigation, the government has warned all groups or individuals involved in masquerade activities to refrain from further excesses, stressing that any violation will result in strict sanctions. The statement reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and security of women, children, youth, and all residents of Enugu.

The families of the deceased victims have received heartfelt condolences from the state government, with promises of swift justice to ensure such tragedies are never repeated.

The crisis meeting is scheduled to take place at the State Secretariat on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 1 pm, where the traditional rulers and town union leaders will discuss urgent steps to restore peace and prevent future violence.

As tension remains high in the affected communities, the government calls on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The Enugu State Government has made it clear that it will not allow the Oriokpa masqueraders or any group to instill fear in the hearts of its people.
