The Emir of Gusau in Zamfara State, His Royal Highness Dr. Ibrahim Bello, has passed away at the age of 71. His death occurred on Friday in Abuja after a prolonged battle with illness.
Dr. Bello ascended to the position of the 16th Emir of Gusau on March 16, 2015, succeeding his late father, who held the title before him. His reign spanned over a decade, during which he demonstrated exemplary leadership and dedication to the well-being of his people.
Before assuming the role of Emir, Dr. Bello had a distinguished career in public service, where he rose to prominence as the Permanent Secretary in the former Sokoto State and, subsequent to its creation, in Zamfara State. His extensive experience in governance and administration laid a strong foundation for his leadership, allowing him to address the challenges faced by his emirate effectively.

The news of the Emir’s passing was confirmed by Sulaiman Idis, spokesperson for Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, who expressed profound sorrow over the loss. “With deep sadness, I received the news of the passing of our revered father, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau,” the governor stated in an official release.
Governor Lawal extended heartfelt condolences to the Zamfara State Council of Chiefs, the Emir’s family, the Gusau Emirate, and the entirety of the Zamfara community. He described the late Emir as a “pillar of wisdom and leadership,” emphasizing, “For over a decade, he led the people of Gusau with dignity, faith, and an unwavering commitment to progress.”
In his tribute, Governor Lawal highlighted the personal connection he shared with the Emir, referring to him as a trusted confidant and father figure. “I have lost a father whose counsel and support were invaluable to me,” he lamented. He concluded his statement with prayers for the departed Emir, wishing, “May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah,” reflecting the deep respect and admiration held for Dr. Ibrahim Bello by the people of Zamfara State.
