In a stirring message marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary, Comrade Warri Ovoke Friday, Chairman of Isoko South Local Government Council, has called on citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made by the nation’s forefathers and to recommit themselves to the progress of the country, particularly the Isoko community.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey to independence, Comrade Friday paid tribute to the late Pa James Augustine Ekpre Otobo, a former deputy premier of the defunct Midwest Region, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s independence talks in London. Pa Otobo, the Chairman noted, not only contributed to securing Nigeria’s freedom but also worked tirelessly to give the Isoko people a distinct identity within the Nigerian federation.
“Our freedom is the result of the struggles of many brave hearts,” Comrade Friday stated. “Sacrificing one’s life requires infallible courage, and the blood of numerous indomitable spirits won the freedom we enjoy today.”
He urged Nigerians, especially those in Isoko South, to take pride in their identity and play active roles in the nation’s development. “It doesn’t matter who we are; what matters is our contribution to the betterment of the country. Now it is our turn to work towards the progress of this nation, especially our dear Isoko South.”

Since gaining independence in 1960, Nigeria has made significant progress, transforming from a country emerging from colonialism to one of the fastest-growing economies in the world by 2015 and the second-largest in Africa. Comrade Friday highlighted these achievements, urging citizens to embrace responsibility, diligence, and unity in shaping Nigeria’s future.
“Let us be responsible citizens and build our nation through our untiring diligence and unity. Let us make our society a tolerant one and a better place to live in for future generations,” he added.
Comrade Friday concluded his message with a hopeful vision for the future, wishing all Nigerians a day filled with patriotic spirit and a renewed commitment to building a better nation. “As you celebrate this day, always have it in mind that no nation is perfect, and it can only be made perfect by me and you. Happy Independence Day.” He added.
