U.S. billionaire and tech mogul Elon Musk has officially unveiled a new political party called the America Party, declaring it a response to what he describes as the United States’ descent into a one-party system. The announcement, made on Saturday, follows growing tensions between Musk and former ally President Donald Trump, marking a dramatic shift in the billionaire’s political alignment ahead of the 2026 midterms and 2028 presidential race.
Musk, who once supported Trump and served as head of the Department of Government Efficiency under his administration, said the creation of the America Party is driven by a desire to restore genuine democracy and challenge entrenched political interests. “We live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk posted on X, his social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “The America Party is about giving power back to the people and ending government waste, corruption, and regulatory capture.”
The announcement followed an online poll Musk posted to his millions of followers on X, asking whether the U.S. needed a new political party. With overwhelming support in the responses, Musk seized the momentum to launch what he says will be a movement focused on liberty, innovation, and national renewal.
Tensions between Musk and Trump have escalated in recent weeks, fueled by policy clashes and personal attacks. Trump, in a fiery post on Truth Social, took aim at Musk’s companies, particularly Tesla, accusing them of surviving on government subsidies. “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back to South Africa,” Trump wrote, sparking backlash and adding fuel to the already growing divide between the former president and Silicon Valley leaders.

Further intensifying the rift, Republican lawmakers recently blocked a proposal backed by Musk that would have exempted the artificial intelligence industry from burdensome state regulations. This move comes amid broader concerns in the tech sector over Trump’s revised legislative agenda, which includes new taxes on green energy firms, increased incentives for fossil fuel industries, and rising regulatory costs, all of which threaten the bottom lines of Musk’s ventures.
Trump also suggested that the Department of Government Efficiency, which Musk previously led, should scrutinize the billionaire’s government ties more closely. The department, established to modernize IT systems and cut excessive spending, had been one of Musk’s flagship roles within the Trump administration until their falling out.
The final straw came when a key provision in Trump’s legislative package, designed to shield the rapidly growing AI sector from state and local interference, was stripped from the bill just hours before the vote, a move widely seen as a direct blow to Musk’s interests and the broader tech community.
With Musk now openly challenging Trump’s grip on the political right, the launch of the America Party could signal the beginning of a disruptive new chapter in U.S. politics. Analysts say Musk’s influence, vast resources, and massive online following make him a formidable player capable of drawing support from both disillusioned conservatives and libertarian-leaning independents.
