The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed operatives of the Force Intelligence Department to obtain the statement of, Alhaji Aminu Sanusi, in Kano, following the withdrawal of an earlier invitation extended to him over a violent incident during the Sallah celebration on March 30, 2025.
In a press release dated April 6, 2025, the police confirmed that it initially invited Alhaji Sanusi to provide an account of the events that led to a breakdown of law and order in Kano.
However, the police stated that “following advice from respected stakeholders and in line with the inspector-general of police’s commitment to ensuring that policing actions are not politicized or misinterpreted, the invitation was withdrawn.
“Instead, the inspector general of police has instructed FID operatives to travel to Kano to obtain the statement directly.”
According to the statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the incident stemmed from a breach of a mutual agreement between the police, Kano State Government, and the two disputed emirs, Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi, that no Durbar Festival would take place on Sallah Day to avoid violence.
Despite this agreement, the police said, “Alhaji Aminu Sanusi, who had attended the Eid prayers in his car, decided to mount a horse in a procession after Eid prayers on Sallah Day, accompanied by local vigilantes.”

This act reportedly triggered unrest, leading to the death of one Usman Sagiru and injuries to several others.
Egbetokun had earlier deployed DIG Abubakar Sadiq, the head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), to mediate between the two emirs.
The decision to cancel the Durbar was part of efforts to maintain public safety.
The police emphasized that it had previously warned both parties to avoid actions that could provoke violence.
“A situation which the force had earlier warned against and intended to avert by the emissaries sent earlier to both Alhaji Sanusi and Alhaji Ado Bayero,” the statement noted.
While confirming that arrests have been made in connection with the incident, the police reiterated its commitment to professionalism, justice, and neutrality.
“All individuals found culpable will at the end be brought to justice,” the statement added.
The police assured the public of its dedication to conducting thorough investigations and maintaining peace across the country.
