The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has warned police officers against unlawful and prolonged detentions, emphasizing the need to uphold human rights.
In a statement released on Sunday, Egbetokun reminded officers of their duty to respect the fundamental rights of individuals, particularly regarding pre-trial detentions.
He stressed that detaining suspects beyond the legally stipulated period violates Sections 34 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantee the right to dignity and personal liberty.
The police chief cautioned that any police officer found guilty of violating these principles would face serious disciplinary actions.

He urged all personnel to embrace a culture of accountability and professionalism in their dealings with the public.
“Unlawful detention erodes public trust and confidence in the police,” the statement read. “The Nigeria Police Force is committed to ensuring that all individuals in custody are treated with respect and in accordance with the law.”
The inspector general of police further stated that the current police leadership is dedicated to protecting human rights while ensuring effective law enforcement.
He emphasized that by prioritizing justice and integrity, the police aims to foster stronger relationships with the communities it serves.
