The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the expansion of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) desk offices to all police divisions across Nigeria, in a major step toward strengthening human rights protection.
Previously, limited to zonal and state commands, the GBV desk offices will now be available at the divisional level, ensuring quicker response times and improved service delivery for victims of gender-based violence.
This move is part of the police commitment to providing unbiased justice and support for vulnerable groups, according to the statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Saturday.
To ensure effective implementation, Egbetokun has directed that only qualified officers be appointed as GBV desk officers.
These officers will undergo specialized training, to handle cases professionally and with sensitivity.

Additionally, they will also oversee the Juvenile, Women, and Children Section in their respective divisions, creating a more comprehensive support system for victims of gender violence.
The expansion, the statement added, reflects the dedication of the police to safeguarding the rights of all citizens and providing a structured, victim-centered approach to GBV cases.
“The inspector general of police has encouraged Nigerians to report incidents of violence and utilize the newly expanded desk offices to seek justice and protection.
He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that citizens’ rights are protected without bias or discrimination,” Adejobi stated.
