The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is facing a backlash on X (formerly Twitter) from Netizens following the arrest of popular Lagos socialite and businessman, Emeka Okonkwo Daniel, widely known as E-Money.
He was apprehended for allegedly misusing and spraying naira and dollars notes at an event, an act deemed to violate the Foreign Exchange Act.
Critics are expressing their discontent with the EFCC’s priorities, arguing that the commission is focusing on minor offenses while neglecting more serious cases of corruption and financial crimes.
@Bxexpert said: “These ones are just parading themselves like smoke. They will leave their major assignment and start fooling around. Please note that this arrest is not verified by either party, but they want us to believe they’re working. Clowns”
@ctstr pointed out the inconsistencies in the EFCC’s actions, citing the lack of accountability for more significant offenders, like former Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, while focusing on individuals like E-Money.
“Stop fooling yourselves. You are not working. You are a dead organisation that only serves the interest of powerful politicians. Why have you not arrested Hadi Sirika, the former aviation minister, who pulled one of the biggest heists in history? Puppets. Chase the bigger crime,” he said.
Some users commented on the cultural practice of money spraying at events, questioning how the EFCC plans to reconcile such traditional customs with enforcement.
@Recreate_urself said: “@officialEFCC you were not established to chase ‘naira abusers.’ You were established to stop the looting of the public treasury, which is still going on unabated.
Just get serious.”

@Olorogun_Ernert said: “It seems EFCC is bored because people spray dollar bills all over the world, and it’s not a crime. I believe they just want to extort some money from him. Nigeria is just a peculiar nation in general.”
@Samuelessang said: “The EFCC seems serious about cracking down on naira abuse, but I wonder how they’ll balance this with cultural practices like money spraying at events, something so common in Nigeria.”
@adekunmisona said: “@officialEFCC Chief Okoya’s son is above the law, up till now that boy hasn’t been arrested or charged to court for abusing our naira. E-money sprayed dollars in Nigeria and was arrested. I don’t understand how you guys operate.”
E-Money was allegedly arrested on Monday night at his residence in the Omole area of Lagos for allegedly spraying dollar notes, an act said to violate the Foreign Exchange Act.
As of the latest updates, the EFCC has not made any official statement regarding E-Money’s arrest.
