The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed a viral social media advert claiming that Nigerians would receive a ₦500,000 reward for reporting suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as ‘Yahoo boys’.
In a public notice shared on its verified X handle , the anti-graft agency described the advert as fake, warning the public not to be deceived.
The EFCC stamped the viral flyer with a bold “FAKE NEWS” label and the inscription: “THIS IS A FALSE ADVERT. BEWARE!”, making it clear that the commission did not authorise or publish the message.
The fake advert, which circulated widely online, falsely claimed that anyone who reported a ‘Yahoo boy’ would receive a ₦500,000 bonus.

It also featured the EFCC’s logo and contact details, giving it the appearance of an official campaign.
However, the commission has urged Nigerians to disregard the flyer, stressing that it is fraudulent and does not represent any official EFCC initiative.
The agency advised the public to verify information through its verified communication channels before sharing or acting on any message bearing its name, warning that fake announcements can be used to mislead unsuspecting citizens.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to fighting economic and financial crimes while urging Nigerians to rely only on authentic information released through its official platforms.
