The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that its official X account, formerly known as Twitter, is temporarily down due to an ongoing system upgrade. The account, which boasts over two million followers, has been inaccessible for several days, sparking speculation and concern among users.
Visitors to the EFCC’s X account have been met with a message stating, “The term you entered did not bring up any results. Please try again later,” leading to rumors that the account may have been hacked or compromised. However, the EFCC has assured the public that this is not the case.
Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the EFCC, addressed the situation, stating, “Our X account is down temporarily due to ongoing upgrades, and we will soon bounce back. You know when there is an upgrade in a system, it may be temporarily down and inaccessible. We are doing the upgrade to serve the public better.”
In response to circulating reports, Oyewale emphasized that the account was not hacked. “Our account was not hacked. It will soon start running,” he confirmed, reassuring followers that the downtime is purely for technical enhancements.

Despite the temporary unavailability of the X account, Oyewale highlighted that the EFCC’s other digital platforms, including its website, Facebook, and Instagram pages, remain fully operational.
While the EFCC has clearly indicated that the downtime is due to system upgrades, there are several other reasons why an X account may become temporarily inaccessible. These can include poor internet connection, uncleared cache, suspicious activity triggering security measures, or even a violation of X’s policies that leads to the account being flagged.
The EFCC asked users to remain patient and stay connected through the agency’s other social media channels for the latest updates.
