The Governing Council of that Edo State University Uzairue, has publicly refuted claims that Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Dawood Omolumen Egbefo was suspended, and allegedly replaced.

This controversy, ignited by the actions of Emeritus Professor T.O.K. Audu, Chairman of the Council, has raised questions about governance and authority within the institution.

The dispute began on November 4, when Prof. Audu reportedly announced the suspension of Prof. Egbefo and installed Engr. Prof. M.J.E. Evbogbai as Acting Vice Chancellor, attributing the decision to concerns over “gross incompetence” and alleged financial mismanagement by Prof. Egbefo.

However, in a subsequent meeting, the council categorically stated that Prof. Audu’s actions did not reflect an official council resolution. According to the council, it holds no unilateral authority to suspend or appoint an acting Vice Chancellor, a power reserved for the university’s Visitor, who must channel decisions through the Ministry of Education.

A communiqué signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, Habib Ekhalefo, reaffirmed that Prof. Egbefo remains in his role under an appointment authorized by the Ministry of Education on May 31, 2024.

The communiqué further stated that any actions undertaken by Prof. Evbogbai in his brief appointment are null and void and warned that failure to respect the council’s directive would lead to disciplinary action.

The praised, Prof. Egbefo’s tenure pointing at his recent recognition from the Northern Council of Nigeria, which honored him for his impactful contributions to education.

The statement noted that “This award underscored his commitment to educational reform, which he demonstrated during his time at Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida University in Niger State before assuming his current role at Edo State University.

“His achievements have been cited as evidence of his suitability for his role as Acting Vice Chancellor and his efforts in upholding academic and administrative excellence at Edo State University.”

The internal conflict has brought into focus issues around governance and transparency at Edo State University, with many stakeholders advocating for formalized procedures and a clear line of authority in administrative decisions.

This episode raises broader concerns over stability within the institution’s leadership and calls for adherence to due process to maintain institutional integrity and academic continuity.
