Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has disclosed that the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state collectively squandered over N83 billion in federal allocations within 12 months. This massive sum was meant to drive grassroots development but has reportedly yielded little to no impact, leaving schools, infrastructure, and other public services neglected.
Speaking during a courtesy visit from the Acting Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government, Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, and other dignitaries, Governor Okpebholo lamented the mismanagement of funds under the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-controlled councils.
The Governor highlighted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration increased monthly federal allocations to LGAs significantly—from N3.5 billion to over N8 billion, emphasizing a commitment to grassroots development. Despite these increased funds, the LGAs have failed to deliver tangible results.
“The Chairmen have been in office for the past year and have nothing to show for it,” Governor Okpebholo stated. “These Chairmen had the boldness to withdraw N800 million monthly from Local Government accounts while schools suffered without good classrooms, teachers, and infrastructure. This is unacceptable, and we are here to correct these wrongs.”

The Governor praised President Tinubu’s resolve in addressing systemic challenges, such as the removal of the fuel subsidy, which he said has paved the way for the proper allocation of resources to LGAs.
Okpebholo assured that his administration would not tolerate inefficiency, promising strict oversight and collaboration with councils that align with President Tinubu’s vision. He also unveiled plans to prioritize agricultural investments, which he believes will transform the state’s economy and create sustainable development.
Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, Acting Chairman of Akoko-Edo LGA, pledged to work closely with Governor Okpebholo to ensure that the dividends of democracy reach the grassroots. “Governance is now moving to the grassroots, and we will support your administration to succeed,” he affirmed.
Other leaders, including former Edo State House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Kabiru Ajoto and Akoko-Edo APC Chairman Hon. Monday Ose, lauded the Governor’s developmental strides, particularly the construction of the Auchi-Ibilo road and appointments of Akoko-Edo indigenes to strategic positions.
The Governor’s revelations have sparked widespread public outrage, with many calling for investigations into the financial management of the LGAs. Civil society groups are also urging the government to ensure transparency and accountability to prevent future misuse of funds.
As the administration moves to implement reforms, all eyes are on Edo State to see if Governor Okpebholo’s promises of accountability and grassroots development will yield the desired results.
