The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the immediate removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Anugbum Onuaha, ahead of the upcoming National Assembly by-elections.
State Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee, Anthony Aziegbemi, made the demand at a press conference in Benin on Tuesday.
He expressed concern that the state’s resident electoral commissioner had acted in a biased way during the last governor’s election, which has led to a loss of trust in his ability to be fair.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled by-elections for August 16 to fill two vacant seats in the Edo Central Senatorial District and the Ovia Federal Constituency left empty by Governor Monday Okpebholo and Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, respectively.
Aziegbemi warned that Dr. Onuaha’s continued involvement could jeopardize the fairness of the upcoming by-elections.
He accused him of undermining the integrity of the electoral process in Edo State during the previous polls.
The PDP is also calling for the removal of certain electoral officers who were involved in the last gubernatorial election, stating that their presence in the upcoming elections would not be acceptable due to their role in previous irregularities.

The party highlighted its commitment to ensuring free and fair elections, rallying around the motto “one man, one vote.”
It urged INEC and security agencies to ensure transparency and integrity in the electoral process.
Responding to recent defections in the PDP, Aziegbemi wished the departing members well, but expressed confidence in the PDP’s grassroots support and strength.
He emphasized that political situations change over time and encouraged voters to stay alert, actively participate, and support PDP candidates who can deliver benefits to their communities.
Aziegbemi thanked the public for their support and affirmed the party’s dedication to protecting democracy in Edo State and beyond.
Regarding preparations for the by-elections, Aziegbemi expressed faith in the party’s chances of winning.
He noted that the PDP followed a careful process, including screening and primaries, to select its candidates, ensuring that the selection was fair and accepted by most party members.
Prince Joe Okojie has been chosen as the candidate for Edo Central Senatorial District election, while Johnny Aikpitanyi will represent the party in Ovia Federal Constituency.
