Ebonyi State has been thrown into mourning after unknown gunmen killed HRH Jesophat Ikegwu, the traditional ruler of Ishinkwor community in Onicha Local Government Area. The attack occurred on Wednesday night at the monarch’s palace, sources confirmed to The Trumpet.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the palace and shot Ikegwu through a window, leaving the community in shock. The Onicha Local Government Chairman, Ikechukwu Ogbofia, condemned the killing, stating that police have launched a full investigation and urged residents to remain calm.
This incident marks the fifth reported killing of monarchs in Ebonyi State in recent times. Last month, the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area was abducted and killed, with his body set ablaze. Although nine suspects were arrested in connection with that crime, no updates on prosecutions have been reported.
