The Ebonyi State Government has arrested a man seen in a viral video extorting vegetable sellers at the International Market in Abakaliki, in clear violation of the Executive Order banning the taxation of perishable goods in the state.
Governor Francis Nwifuru had earlier issued a stern warning on March 20, 2024, during the swearing-in of the Ebonyi State Revenue Appeal Commission. The Governor cautioned against indiscriminate taxation, particularly targeting petty traders and farmers selling their produce in local markets.
Reacting to the viral video, the Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Leo Oketa, confirmed the suspect’s arrest, adding that the government remains resolute in upholding the Executive Order. He emphasized that the actions of the individual in the video were illegal and did not, in any way, represent the state government.
“On multiple occasions, the Governor has made it clear that sellers of perishable goods such as vegetables and tomatoes should not be taxed under any circumstance. Unfortunately, a viral video surfaced showing an unauthorized individual extorting traders at the International Market, which directly contradicts the Governor’s directive,” Oketa stated.

He further revealed that the Nigerian Police Force in Abakaliki promptly intervened after being alerted and successfully arrested the suspect. The individual will face prosecution in accordance with the law to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Ebonyi State Government reiterated its strong stance against the harassment of petty traders, warning that anyone found engaging in illegal taxation of perishable goods sellers will be treated as a criminal. Governor Nwifuru’s administration remains committed to protecting small-scale traders and ensuring that local markets thrive without undue exploitation.
